Mercure Debrecen Hotel Receives BREEAM Excellent International Certification

The Mercure Debrecen Hotel was completed in 2022 as a project of Bajcsy Invest Kft., a subsidiary of our SZINORG Group, and constructed by our company, HUNÉP Zrt. Now in its third year of operation, the hotel has established a solid presence in the business tourism accommodation sector, actively contributing to the growth of tourism in the city.

During construction, we used sustainable building materials that support environmentally friendly operation and long-term energy efficiency. The hotel utilizes smart energy systems, reduces waste production, and supports eco-friendly initiatives in its daily operations. Sustainability has become an integral part of our group’s activities—without compromising on business performance. A clear testament to our commitment to sustainability is that Mercure Debrecen became the first hotel outside the capital in Hungary to achieve the internationally recognized BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification at the Excellent level. This certification confirms the building’s environmentally conscious and energy-efficient design.

BREEAM is a sustainability assessment method developed in the United Kingdom. Its aim is to monitor and mitigate the environmental impact of buildings throughout their life cycle, provide credible environmental labels, promote the recognition of environmental benefits in buildings, and stimulate demand for sustainable buildings, construction products, and supply chains—ultimately creating long-term value.

The certification is based on assessments across 9+1 categories, each addressing key impact areas such as low-carbon design, durability and resilience, climate change adaptation, and the protection of ecological value and biodiversity. This certification is recognized both internationally and within Hungary, making it one of the most popular rating systems today.

Currently, Mercure Debrecen is the highest-scoring BREEAM-certified hotel building in Hungary. Achieving the Excellent rating is a unique accomplishment in itself, as only two hotels in Hungary have received such a high assessment under this system. The BREEAM certificate means that we meet strict environmental performance standards, ensuring our hotel provides a green and welcoming environment for guests while minimizing our ecological footprint.
